What does a doula do?
Birth doulas are trained professionals who provide emotional, physical, and educational support to expecting parents. During labor they are able to offer support, as well as pain relief and comfort measures, such as counter pressure, aromatherapy, and massages. They are able to help with changing position, breathing, and relaxation. After the birth, they are able to help you with feeding, and adjusting to life with a newborn.
As a birth doula, my role is to accompany families in labor to help ensure a safe, and satisfying birth experience. I will provide emotional and physical support during your labor and delivery, and I will support you in whatever choices you decide on. I act from the awareness that birth is a normal and physiological process and a profound life experience, and I will maintain your privacy by following HIPAA guidelines
The presence of a doula alleviates some of the pressure off your partner and other support people, allowing them to relax and enjoy the experience with you. I can help them to feel calm and informed throughout labor, giving them ideas to continue to support you from beginning to end. At no time will I take over and exclude your partner, I am there to support BOTH of you at all times.
